Someone once said, “The key to life is good timing and good lighting.” That, and the ability to juggle chainsaws while maintaining your people skills and the next thing you know, you’re producing and directing videos. This is obviously an over simplification. Video Production takes a talented and dedicated team to pull off a project but even the best teams need direction and vision. Understanding both the creative aspects and the logistical aspects are the skills I employ when tackling a new project.

Capturing a live performance with one camera sounds easier than it looks when you have 6 guitars to showcase and only 2 guitarists. Include a little wardrobe change and the straightening of guitar straps and guitars on stands for a seamless take and you’ve got your self a good time in my book.

Any shoot involving a member of the Grateful Dead requires a lot of pre-production and planning. The stakes are always raised when you’re limited with time and access to the talent. These challenges only make it that much sweeter when everyone involved is happy with the end result.

An impromptu shoot can yield a certain charm. Rather than scramble for “perfection” I chose to lean into the fact that this was going to be raw and real. In doing so, it separated this video from the pack in the best possible way.
